Al Di Meola Di Meola's "Consequence of Chaos" by: Miles Overn Between the opening San Marco (Moderna) and the closing San Marco (Vecchio) percolates an exotic blend of world influences that clearly do not exist separate from the musicianship and musicality of one of the jazz/fusion idioms true creators and innovators. That Di Meola possesses astonishing chops is seldom lost on his listeners. Additionally, his compositional genius is becoming more acknowledged. This offering is another step forward in the natural and complete coming together of those two aspects. “Tempest” and “Black Pearls” perhaps take one back to his genre establishing “Elegant Gypsy” days, although some would suggest they lack the shear reckless abandon found on that album. The control and taste that shook the guitar world back then, however, clearly have only increased. Selections such as “Azucar” and “Sanctuary” provide contrast and are well placed within the track order to produce an ebb and flow that carries one along, sometimes at breakneck speeds and other times at a breathtaking crawl, the kind where you’re blown away by the scenery and you ache to soak it all in. Di Meola’s body of work continues to expand. This CD deserves a true listening; one where you take the phone of the hook, dim the lights, eliminate all distractions and give yourself totally to the music for its entire duration. You’ll be thankful that you did.

Whether on electric or acoustic, Di Meola is amongst the finest guitarists in jazz and fusion history. Di Meola's solo career started before the age of 20. His "Elegant Gypsy" album stands as one of the most important in the fusion space.
