Bill Haley, considered by many to be the father of rock and roll, was born on the outskirts of Detroit. By his early teens he was earning money playing guitar in country & western bands. A stint as a program director of a local radio station in Pennsylvania exposed him to a mixture of music from country & western all the way through to R&B. In the process, he developed the sound of rock and roll that his band, Bill Haley and His Comets, became known for.
