Sir Paul McCartney to perform at White House

McCartney will be joined onstage by a host of fellow musicians, who will pay tribute through song, and will perform in front of President Obama and other dignitaries.

Sir Paul McCartney, who famously played with and composed as part of The Beatles, Paul McCartney and Wings, and as a solo artist for the better part of five decades, will receive his Gershwin Prize for Popular Song award in the East Room of the White House on June 2, 2010. McCartney will be joined onstage by a host of fellow musicians, who will pay tribute through song, and will perform in front of President Obama and other dignitaries.

McCartney was chosen for the award in November of 2009 by the Librarian of Congress, James H. Billington. He is the 3rd recipient, following original winner Paul Simon in 2007 and Stevie Wonder in 2009. The award, which commemorates the legendary and prolific American songwriting team of George and Ira Gershwin, honours lifetime contribution in the area of popular song.

The performance will be recorded as part of the “In Performance at the White House” series and will be aired on PBS on June 28th. Other musicians appearing with McCartney will include previous winner Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello, Herbie Hancock, Faith Hill, and others. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld will also be onstage.
