The Band Perry Nuclear Pioneers

The Band Perry opened their Canadian Tour with a stunning performance at Penticton’s South Okanagan Events Centre. This young family trio and their band grabbed the audience’s attention from the moment they took to the stage and never relinquished it until they sent them home at the end of what can only be described as a dynamic and powerful show.

The energy was practically nuclear. Instant and insanely intense. Blam, they were there and the show was on. All the way on. Yes, they moved around the stage, and yes, they contorted their bodies to the music and put their full physicality into the concert, but the energy was as palpable even when they were standing still. This was energy from the inside out, and it was injected into each and every song where it then exploded out to the assembled crowd. In true nuclear fashion, that crowd lit up immediately and will probably be glowing for days to come.

Lead vocalist Kimberly Perry knows how to strut, and how to strike a pose. She combined those talents with her voice and some strong songs to deliver the kind of performance one usually expects from a little more established band or artist. Brothers Neil and Reid matched her in terms of energy and involvement with the song, and the joy on their faces was that of people totally into what they’re doing.

Their mega hit, “If I Die Young”, was on the set list, as were other songs such as “You Lie’ and “All Your Life.” New material from their latest CD, “Pioneer” was also performed as the band is only 2 albums into what promises to be a long and successful career. Staging and lighting were also beyond where such a young band should be. This was a production, and a good one at that. Sound was great. Not a lot to not like about this concert.

The pacing of the concert was also excellent. The inclusion of a solo violin performance of Oh Canada and the words spoken and sentiments expressed to the audience around it showed a high level of musical and performance maturity. Hearing the crowd sing along while the violinist played was quite poignant. Truly a shared moment, an unexpected shared moment.

Don’t be surprised if Entertainer of the Year nominations start appearing on the radar for this band. Definitely worth leaving home for. If The Band Perry hits your town in the weeks ahead, go out and get electrified.
